American Blues

American Blues
walked down the street took a right
first thing I knew I got into a fight
I walked away took a left
and found myself in another mess
it’s head or tales you always lose
just another case of the American blues
don’t drink the water, don’t breath the air
stop lookin that way it’s not polite to stare
eat a greasy burger poison apple pie
if you’re feeling queasy don’t ask me why
mr natural’s got on his truckin shoes
he’s got a bad case of the American blues
sittin in a bedroom all alone
he’s letting out a very painful moan
ain’t no place he fits in he ain’t right in his skin
doesn’t know where he ends or begins
he’s suicidal dejected, lost and confused
another young man with the American blues
you got your peanut butter sandwich wrapped in a sack
you got your books and homework on your back
and a kid you know from your home room
is packin heat he’s gonna use it soon
13 year olds bringing death to school
6 oclock news got the American blues
first class clowns are runnin things
won’t be all over when the fat lady sings
gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better
these days are kinda now or never
it’s up to you how you gonna chose
what's it gonna do to these American blues

No Thanks, Maggie

No Thanks Maggie
Saw you outside of a bar, about half past ten,
you slurred the words, ‘let’s get together again’
then you started cryin’ about what might have been
your eyes are still green and your hair’s still red
but Maggie you look a little overfed
and these days I’m sleepin in another bed
no thanks Maggie
no thanks Maggie
no thanks Maggie I’m already spoken for
back in the day yeah we had us a time
drinking that whiskey and snorting them lines
but these day’s Maggie I’m doin fine
I know you got your memories that’s ok
I’m sorry that you think I left you astray
but we were skiddin’ sideways down a dark highway
one of these days and it won’t be long
I worry that you’re gonna take your swan song
yeah Maggie your head is still screwed on wrong
don’t you come knockin on my back door
you won’t find what you’re lookin’ for
cause I don’t even live there anymore

Molly

Molly
Molly brought me to her room
she said there’s no concern
out through the window shone the moon
and soon her love I learned
all one summer we did play
as if there was no end
I knew that it would fade away
but I needed to pretend
she moved like a woodland sprite
danced from place to place
she was dark and she was light
and it showed across her face
she didn’t live inside the town
said she never could
she favored wearing green and brown
like the forest wood
if we raised some little sprouts
I thought they’d bloom beautifully
she said ‘what are you on about?
you won’t do that with me.”
No bearing children, she explained
a sickness of my youth
so liberty is what I’ve gained
and a vision of the truth
and to you that truth I’ll tell
blue eyes wide and round
we just have now so live it well
you’ll soon be in the ground
so like the summer wind we flew
it rolled on endlessly
but as it ended yes I knew
she was done with me
soon the autumn colors changed
she was gone without a trace
leaving not a note behind
nowhere for me to chase

Real Fine Girl
02:31
|
|
||
see the girl walkin down the street
she got a smile for everybody she meets
one for me and even one for you
it’ll be a better place before she’s through
she’s a real fine girl
she’s a real fine girl
she’s a real fine girl the kind won’t find every day
you can ask her sweet, you can ask her nice
she won’t give it up easy take my advice
she got a razor tongue she don’t suffer fools
she knows how to play outside the rules
she’s a real fine girl
she’s the kind of girl who’ll go and fetch water from the well
she the kind of girl who’ll never let you down, far as I can tell
we went race track the other day
I bet on the bobtail she bet on the bay
sure enough buddy that bay won
she ripped up her ticket just for fun
she’s a real fine girl

Ridin on a Train
04:17
|
|
||
meet me in the dawn with your winter jacket on
and we’ll go ridin on the train
your mama and your dad will pretend that they are sad
when we go ridin on the train
but your daddy he’s no good and he did things he never should
so we’ll go ridin on the train
and your mama turned her head and swallowed words she never said
so we’ll go ridin on the train
on the train on the train on the train on the train
we’ll go ridin on the train
I got money in my coat it’ll last a month I hope
when we go ridin on the train
my cousin in Calgary said he’s got a job for me
so come on, let’s go ridin on the train
and I love you with all my heart and I swear we’ll never part
so come on, let’s go ridin on the train
so don’t you worry none, we’ll be gone before the sun
together we’ll go ridin’ on the train
one day you’ll be my wife and we will have a better life
cause we’re goin ridin on the train
we’ll make our way along and together we’ll be strong
and we’re going ridin on the train
there’s a great big world to see waitin for you and me
when we go ridin on the train
and there’s no need to fear you will always have me near
when we go out ridin on the train
on the train on the train
I got my winter jacket on and the sun’s up way past dawn
I’m all alone here, waitin for the train
I guess you are afraid but I’m still leavin I can’t stay
I’m goin away ridin on the train

Drop Down to Nothin'
02:37
|
|||
Drop Down to Nothin'
well you can lose your woman, that ain't hard
and you can lose your money if you play the wrong card
and you can lose your job if you say the wrong thing
and you can lose till you can't hear the birdies sing
but when you drop down to nothin
when you drop down to nothin
when you drop down to nothin
you got nothin but yourself to pull you up
you can waste your days on bourbon and beer
and you can drive away everybody that's near
and you tell yourself you don't need no one
and you can drink top shelf until the bottle's done
but when you drop down to nothin
you can lose your mind to worry and doubt
and you can fuss and fret what it's all about
and explain how the world is gonna explode
and there ain't no hope comin down the road
but when you drop down to nothin

Just About To Fall in Love Again
It’s a first class puzzle it’s a genuine mystery
it baffled Shakespeare so don’t go askin me
it’s got its own reasons this thing they call the heart
and you never know the season or how it’s gonna start
and I tried it out one time tried it out two times
and I’m just about to fall in love again
I tried it out three times I tried it out four times
and one thing I learned is that you can’t pretend
sometimes the whole thing kind of disappears
you might have been lacking something between your ears
but if it comes a knockin on your door
try not to screw it up like you did before
I don’t know anything about love
all I know it’s you I’m dreamin of
it’s first class puzzle it’s a genuine mystery
but when I’m kissing you it’s clear as clear can be
so I guess I’ll just listen to my heart
and sit back and let the movie start

September Morning

|

September Morning
September morning
cool day dawning
don’t know what to do
I could go to the fair
but she wouldn’t be there
September morning
damp day dawning
feeling sad and blue
I could go to the town
wander around
but she wouldn’t be there

Stare the Devil Down
02:51
|
|||
Stare the Devil Down
well the devil he is legion, son and manifests in all you do
you can’t hide and you can’t run you gotta beat him through and through
you gotta stare the devil down and spit right in his face
and tell him you ain’t gonna run or move from this here place
he comes bringin’ misery hopelessness and doubt
when you're broke down on your knees you’ll know what’s he’s about
fear is what he’s counting on it’s his most powerful tool
he’ll shake the ground your standin’ on and make you out a fool
grab the devil by the neck and beat his head upon a stone
until that devil’s good and dead then go off on your own

Mad Hatter Blues

|

Mad Hatter Blues
standin on the corner wanta get out on the road
maybe go to Florida but I must have what I’m owed
always gotta holler, holler for the dollar
things ain’t gonna go my way till I get paid
Gotta girlfriend who’s a hippie and she lives in Mississippi
or maybe I am lyin – I just want it to rhy - um
really doesn’t matter, if I’m a mad hatter
really doesn’t matter, really doesn’t matter
everybody needs some respect cause we’re all a wreck
to live in this world you gotta roll with punches
you gotta do the rope-a-dope
to live in this world you gotta play a lotta hunches
and hold onto your hope
the crazy desperado likes the echo in the grotto
but no one comes to hear it, criticize or cheer it
the world keeps grooving the world keeps movin
only thing you can do is keep movin too

Monkey

Monkey
all I've ever been is your monkey
you wind me up to see me hit the drum
all I've ever been is your monkey
you keep my hangin round until I get the job done
when I try to tell you how I feel
I can't make words just monkey noise
when I finally say that my love is real
you're runnin out the door to go hangin with the boys
all I've ever been is your monkey
you like to see me wear my little monkey suit
all I've ever been is your monkey
you scratch my head and say I'm cute
all I've ever been is your monkey

Devil’s Got His Shadow on Your Door
I’ll dust my broom in the morning
and put on a jacket of steel
because things they come without warning
and you never know what is and isn’t real
I gave my girl a locket
along with my undying love
she sailed away with a man in a rocket
now she’s flying somewhere high above
I try and try to be upright
I try to live by my word
but the clowns are running the bigtop
and the circus is gettin absurd
I lost my wheels playing poker
but the game was rigged, it was jive
and there was nothin I could say about it
if I wanted to leave there alive
give me cold well water when I’m thirsty
I’m staying away from whisky and wine
cause I’m the one who mainly can hurt me
and when my head is on straight I do fine
well the ground underneath, is shiftin
and the people standin on it, they’re shifty too
and honesty is out on the ocean driftin
and truth, well, she’s way out of view
so all you ladies and gentlemen
who believe that you’ve got yourself so secure
there's one last point I will tell you, then
the devil’s got his shadow on your door

Dog in the Passenger Side Window
there's a dog in the passenger side window
tongue hangin blowin in the wind
groovin on the speed and the countryside
wearin a crazy ass grin
and he's so happy to be ridin
it's just about explodin his head
and he knows later when they get home
he'll drink water and he'll get fed
there's a dog in the passenger side window
